BERESFORD (GNB) – The provincial government will invest more than $3.3 million in paving and chip seal projects in the Beresford area this year as part of its 2018-19 capital budget.

“To ensure our economy continues to move forward, we need to ensure that we maintain and improve our roads, highways and bridges,” said Education and Early Childhood Development Minister Brian Kenny. “Your government is working hard to keep our transportation infrastructure safe for all New Brunswickers.”

Kenny spoke on behalf of Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Bill Fraser.

The Department of Transportation and Infrastructure will continue work to replace the Brown Bridge, also known as Tetagouche River Bridge No. 2.

Under the Municipal Designated Highway Program, the government and the Town of Beresford will fund storm sewer, curb and gutter work on an 800-metre stretch of Route 134 from des Chalets Street to Martin Street.

Chip sealing will also take place on sections of Cedar Street, Crestview Street, Maple Street, Pine Road, Sunview Road, Thériault Road, Timberland Road, Viateur Avenue and West Lane.

The Municipal Designated Highway Program allows municipalities to apply for funding assistance for capital upgrade projects. Funding for the program has more than doubled since the 2014-15 fiscal year, increasing to $25 million in 2015. It has remained at that level as part of a government commitment to sustain funding for municipalities.

The Department of Transportation and Infrastructure’s $688.2 million capital budget reflects the government’s priority of investing strategically in its buildings, highways and bridges. Strategic investments in infrastructure are a key component of the multi-year New Brunswick Economic Growth Plan, the province’s framework for growing the economy and creating jobs.
