FREDERICTON (GNB) – The provincial government will invest about $1.6 million in improving Fredericton streets and roads as part of its 2018-19 Municipal Designated Highway Program. This is part of a $30-million investment in the Greater Fredericton region this year.

“Your government has made strategic investments in transportation infrastructure a priority,” said deputy premier Stephen Horsman. “Safe, reliable roads are an essential element of job creation and economic growth.”

Horsman spoke on behalf of Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Bill Fraser.

Through the program, the government and the City of Fredericton will jointly fund: the reconstruction of part of Pointe-Sainte-Anne Boulevard; curb and gutter installation on Hanwell Road and Lincoln Road; the paving of sections of Hanwell Road, Waterloo Row, Vanier Industrial Drive, Royal Road and Lincoln Road; and the reconstruction of Lincoln Road between Draco Road and Experimental Road.

The Municipal Designated Highway Program allows municipalities to apply for funding assistance for capital upgrade projects. Funding for the program has more than doubled since the 2014-15 fiscal year, increasing to $25 million in 2015. It has remained at that level as part of a government commitment to sustain funding for municipalities.

“I want to thank the Province of New Brunswick for their investment in upgrading the provincially owned infrastructure in the city,” said Fredericton Mayor Mike O’Brien. “City council approved a capital budget of $7.3 million for work on roads and streets infrastructure in 2018, with approximately $1.5 million going towards partnering with the province on these highway upgrades.”

The department’s $688.2-million capital budget reflects the government’s priority of investing strategically in its buildings, highways and bridges. Strategic investments in infrastructure are a key component of the multi-year New Brunswick Economic Growth Plan, the government’s framework for growing the economy and creating jobs.
