CAMBRIDGE-NARROWS (GNB) – The provincial government and the Village of Cambridge-Narrows will jointly fund a resurfacing project this year under the Municipal Designated Highway Program.

“Your government understands that regular infrastructure maintenance is good for communities and good for the economy,” said Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Bill Fraser. “Modern, reliable infrastructure is crucial to economic growth in our communities.”

The project includes pulverizing and chip sealing on a 6.5-kilometre stretch of Lower Cambridge Road, from civic number 2910 to MacDonald Lane.

“Your government is committed to partnering with New Brunswick’s municipalities to improve infrastructure and spur economic growth,” said Fraser. “We are listening and we are getting things done for communities like Cambridge-Narrows.”

Under the program, municipalities apply for funding assistance for capital upgrade projects. The government received funding requests valued at more than $210 million through the program this year.

“This street upgrade is good news for our village,” said Cambridge-Narrows Mayor Blair Cummings. “This is a great community in which to raise a family, and projects like these help keep our families safe on the roads.”

The province’s $775.6-million capital budget, which includes the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure’s capital budget of $638.5 million, reflects the government’s priority to support its buildings, highways and bridges.

Funding for the Municipal Designated Highway Program has more than doubled since the 2014-15 fiscal year, increasing to $25 million in 2015. It has remained at that level as part of a government commitment to sustain funding for municipalities.

Strategic investments in infrastructure are a key component of the New Brunswick Economic Growth Plan, the government’s framework for growing the economy and creating jobs.
