DRUMMOND (GNB) – The provincial government will fund the paving of a 1.2-kilometre section of Route 108 in Drummond this year as part of the Municipal Designated Highway Program.

The paving will take place between Gagnon Street and the village limit. The project will be completed in two phases, with 1.2 kilometres paved this year and another 1.1 kilometres to occur in the future.

“Your government is listening to New Brunswickers and understands that job creation and economic development are important to New Brunswickers,” said Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Bill Fraser. “Strategic investments in transportation infrastructure can help grow the local economy, both in the short term and the long term.”

Under the program, municipalities apply for funding assistance for capital upgrade projects. The government received more than $210-million in funding requests through the program this year.

“Route 108 is an important road in our community; it is our main street,” said Drummond Mayor France Roussel. “We are pleased to receive provincial funding for its maintenance and improvement.”

Funding for the Municipal Designated Highway Program has more than doubled since the 2014-15 fiscal year, increasing to $25 million in 2015. It has remained at that level as part of a government commitment to sustain funding for municipalities.

The province’s $775.6-million capital budget, which includes the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure’s capital budget of $638.5 million, reflects the government’s priority to support its buildings, highways and bridges.

Strategic investments in infrastructure are a key component of the New Brunswick Economic Growth Plan, the government’s framework for growing the economy and creating jobs.
