NACKAWIC (GNB) – The provincial government will fund 800 metres of ditch stabilization work and culvert construction along Route 105 in Nackawic this year under the Municipal Designated Highway Program.

“Our towns need strong partnerships with the provincial government to maintain and upgrade their infrastructure,” said Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Bill Fraser. “Our commitment to working with municipalities to invest strategically in infrastructure is all part of making New Brunswick the best place to work, live and raise a family.”

A tender has been issued for the work, which will extend from the town water tower to the Nackawic Stream.

“Our government recognizes the value of infrastructure investment in New Brunswick communities,” said Fraser. “We are listening to our municipal partners, and we are getting things done.”

Under the program, municipalities apply for funding assistance for capital upgrade projects. The government received more than $210-million in funding requests through the program this year.

“This is an important project for our town and we are pleased to have received funding,” said Nackawic Mayor Ian Kitchen. “We are grateful for the strong relationship we have with the provincial government.”

The province’s $775.6-million capital budget, which includes the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure’s capital budget of $638.5 million, reflects the government’s priority to support its buildings, highways and bridges.

Funding for the Municipal Designated Highway Program has more than doubled since the 2014-15 fiscal year, increasing to $25 million in 2015. It has remained at that level as part of a government commitment to sustain funding for municipalities.

Strategic investments in infrastructure are a key component of the New Brunswick Economic Growth Plan, the government’s framework for growing the economy and creating jobs.
