SALISBURY (GNB) – The provincial government will fund 1.2 kilometres of paving on Route 106 in Salisbury this year under the Municipal Designated Highway Program.

“Strategic investments in infrastructure make it possible for communities to grow and develop,” said Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Bill Fraser. “Communities like Salisbury depend on strong partnerships with the provincial government to carry out road upgrades.”

This paving will be done between MacNaughton Brook and the eastern village limit. Tenders for the work, which is funded jointly with the Village of Salisbury, will be issued this spring.

Under the program, municipalities apply for funding assistance for capital upgrade projects. The government received more than $210 million in funding requests through the program in 2016.

“Our government understands the importance of investing in communities,” said Fraser. “We are listening to our municipal partners and getting things done.”

“We are pleased to have secured funding under this program for paving work this year,” said Salisbury Mayor Terry Keating. “We value the important relationship we have with our provincial partners, which allows us to maintain and upgrade infrastructure.”

The province’s $775.6-million capital budget, which includes the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure’s capital budget of $638.5 million, reflects the government’s priority to support its buildings, highways and bridges.

Funding for the Municipal Designated Highway Program has more than doubled since the 2014-15 fiscal year, increasing to $25 million in 2015. It has remained at that level as part of a government commitment to sustain funding for municipalities.
