FREDERICTON (GNB) – The Department of Transportation and Infrastructure is partnering with Ability New Brunswick on a pilot project that will see the non-profit organization administer the province’s vehicle retrofit program.
“We are proud of this partnership that will see Ability New Brunswick manage the vehicle retrofit program,” said Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Bill Fraser. “Many New Brunswickers rely on this program to ensure they can fully participate in the economy and the community.”
About 60 clients benefitted this year from the program that provides financial assistance towards supplying and installing eligible retrofitting and accessibility features for vehicles.
“This is a perfect example of government and the non-profit sector working hand in hand,” said Haley Flaro, executive director of Ability New Brunswick. “We bring a solid knowledge and existing relationship with clients to delivering a program that has already benefitted so many.”
As a non-profit, Ability New Brunswick also has the opportunity to leverage donations to provide additional funding for the program.
The department’s vehicle retrofit program is designed to increase the mobility of people with disabilities by financially assisting in the retrofitting of vehicles. The program covers up to 80 per cent of the cost of eligible features for a new or existing vehicle to a maximum grant of $8,000.
The program has a $275,000 operating budget.
