GRAND FALLS (GNB) – The Department of Transportation and Infrastructure will install a new bridge to replace the structure at Little River No. 2.

The modular bridge will be put in place on Beaulieu Mill Road in Grand Falls. The crossing was closed to all traffic in September 2016 following an inspection that identified structural concerns with the bridge.

“We understand how important it is to have infrastructure that New Brunswickers rely on,” said Victoria-La Vallée MLA Chuck Chiasson. “That is why we are making necessary investments like this one for Little River No. 2 Bridge and to make improvements to bridges around our province.”

Chiasson attended for Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Bill Fraser.

More than $76 million will be invested in bridges this year as part of the department’s capital budget.

The investment at Little River No. 2 is part of more than $9 million in investments to improve roads, bridges and highways in northwestern New Brunswick that were identified in this year’s capital budget.

A number of projects are planned for the coming construction season in the northwest including:

• Paving of Route 17 between Airport Road and Saint-Léonard.
• Paving of Route 144 from Rivière-Verte Bridge No. 1 to Doucet Road.
• Work on Route 108.

“By making these infrastructure improvements, we are ensuring that the needs of communities are being met,” said Chiasson. “I am very proud our government is investing in important infrastructure projects. These projects are important to the people of this region and I am proud to be part of a government that is not only listening but is getting things done.”

The province’s $775.6-million capital budget, which includes the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure’s capital budget of $638.5 million, reflects the government’s priority to support its public buildings, highways and bridges.
