MONCTON (GNB) — A new four-lane overpass and improvements to intersections will help improve safety and traffic flow on the Harrisville Boulevard interchange at Route 15.

The provincial and federal governments are investing $13.7 million for the upgrades.

Residents will benefit from a wider, four-lane overpass at the Harrisville Boulevard interchange, new partial roundabouts along the eastbound and westbound ramp terminals, and a new eastbound exit ramp along Route 15 at Industrial Street.

“We understand that residents want infrastructure that is safe for travellers, helps support economic development and is reliable,” said Treasury Board President Roger Melanson. “We are proud to be making an investment that does all those things. It is one more way we are showing that we are focused on the priorities of New Brunswickers.”

Melanson spoke on behalf of Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Bill Fraser.

The upgrades to one of the province’s major arterial highways will reduce greenhouse gas emissions resulting from congestion and enhance access for commuters.

"Public infrastructure connects people, supports job creation, and boosts economic development,” said Moncton-Riverview-Dieppe MP Ginette Petitpas Taylor. “The Government of Canada is working in close partnership with the Government of New Brunswick to ensure we make smart investments that help grow the middle class, promote sustainable development and increase public safety. The improvements to this critical transportation route will help reduce traffic congestion and promote economic growth in the area.”

The provincial government is committing $8.1 million to the project. The federal government will contribute the remaining $5.7 million.

The province’s $757.9-million capital budget, which includes the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure’s capital budget of $638.5 million, reflects the government’s priority to support the public buildings, highways and bridges for which it is responsible.
