MONCTON (GNB) – Detailed planning and preparations are underway for construction of a bridge to replace a portion of the Petitcodiac River causeway.

“This is an important investment in the local economy, the environment and the quality of life of the people who live, work and play on either side of the Petitcodiac River,” said Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Bill Fraser. “Together, we are doing our part to help restore this splendid river.”

The provincial and federal governments recently committed $61.6 million for the third phase of the river restoration.

Work will involve replacing the aging river gate structure with a 240-metre steel girder bridge and realigning the river channel. These improvements will expand on work done in the first and second phases of the project to improve tidal flow and permanently extend the river estuary upstream.

About 25,000 vehicles cross the causeway each day.

More information about the project will be available during an open house from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 1 (storm date Feb. 2) in the Cocoa Room of the Chocolate River Station, 391 Coverdale Rd., Riverview. The public will have an opportunity to meet the group responsible for implementing the project and get an overview on work that has taken place to date, concept designs for the bridge, traffic management, and environmental permitting.
