SACKVILLE (GNB) – The transformation of Bridge Street in Sackville was marked today with an official opening celebration.

The completed project includes the transformation of 150 metres of Bridge Street between Main and Lorne streets. The restoration project will enhance community and tourism activities.

“The provincial government is proud to partner with communities on focused investments that help support the local economy and improve the lives of families,” said Memramcook-Tantramar MLA Bernard LeBlanc. “Improving community infrastructure is an investment that supports quality of life for New Brunswickers and helps local businesses.”

LeBlanc attend the event for Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Bill Fraser.

Work involved upgrades to underground services, including sanitary, water and storm infrastructure. Above-ground work included the removal of electrical poles to increase the functional use of the street; new paving of sidewalks, crosswalks and curbs; beautification of the public area including landscaping; and the addition of street furniture and public art.

“The Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency’s support to the Bridge Street area has improved critical infrastructure by expanding and revitalizing Sackville’s town centre,” said federal Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard Minister Dominic LeBlanc. “These enhancements will strengthen the economic infrastructure of this community, improve the quality of life for those who live here and create a stronger attraction for visitors, which will have a significant impact on tourism and benefit the entire region for years to come.”

LeBlanc spoke on behalf of federal Innovation, Science and Economic Development Minister Navdeep Bains, who is also minister responsible for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA).

“The Town of Sackville is extremely grateful for the federal and provincial assistance that we received for the redevelopment of Bridge Street,” said Sackville Mayor John Higham. “This investment demonstrates a major commitment to our downtown, which is essential to the cultural and economic well-being of our community. The redevelopment of Bridge Street can now be enjoyed by our residents, businesses, visitors and our entire region.”

The federal government invested $300,000 in the project through ACOA’s Innovative Communities Fund. The provincial government contributed $218,450 through the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure. The Town of Sackville contributed $375,598 towards the project.
