COLES ISLAND (GNB) – The Department of Transportation and Infrastructure will proceed with the temporary closures of two bridges on Route 10 in the coming weeks.

The back-to-back closures are being undertaken to perform repair work necessary to strengthen the structures.

The Coles Island North Bridge, on Route 10, will be closed to all traffic beginning May 9, and should reopen to one lane on May 16. When the northbound bridge reopens, the Coles Island South Bridge, also on Route 10, will then be closed to all traffic until May 24.

Detour signs will be posted. The detour route is through Route 710 and Route 695 (at Codys and Cambridge-Narrows).

During the closure, the department will be issuing fleet permits for commercial carriers and local trucking, at no charge, temporarily increasing the allowable gross vehicle weight for a portion of Route 710 and Route 695, described below, to 50,000 kilograms:

  • Route 710 – from the junction of Route 10 to the junction of Route 695.
  • Route 695 – from the junction of Route 710 to the junction of Route 2.

Vehicles exceeding 50,000 kilograms may bypass the construction using the multi-lane divided Highways 1 and 2, which connect at River Glade.

The permit application is available on the department’s website, by calling the special permits office at 506-453-2982, or by emailing [email protected]. The department apologizes for the inconvenience and urges all motorists to drive safely in construction zones.

The public is encouraged to call 511 or visit the 511 website for updates for planned construction and maintenance activities.
