FREDERICTON (GNB) – The provincial government will invest more than $355 million in 2016-17 in bridge and road construction and rehabilitation. The annual average investment on these assets during the last five years, excluding funding for the Route 1 project in 2012-13, has been about $206 million.

“The increased investment will help to stimulate our economy, create jobs and move New Brunswick forward,” said Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Roger Melanson. “We know how important it is to have a safe and efficient transportation system to promote quality of life, travel and economic activity in our province.”

Projects receiving funding include:
•    Centennial Bridge, Miramichi;
•    Southwest Miramichi Bridge No. 4, Doaktown;
•    Route 11, from Route 15 to Shediac River;
•    Magaguadavic River South Street Bridge, St. George;
•    Renous River Bridge No. 1;
•    Route 130, Florenceville-Bristol Bridge;
•    Route 8, Regent Street overpass, Fredericton;
•    Route 11, Caraquet bypass;
•    Route 385, Tobique River Bridge No. 5;
•    Kouchibouguacis River Bridge, Saint-Louis de Kent;
•    Little River No. 3 Bridge, Hickey Road, Saint John;
•    Benjamin River Bridge No. 1 near Charlo; and
•    Pokemouche River Bridge No. 4.

“New Brunswick companies and producers depend on our province’s transportation system to get access to raw materials and to get their products to customers,” said Melanson. “This funding will provide essential maintenance to our transportation network, which plays a vital role in supporting New Brunswick’s economy.”

As the road construction season approaches, the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure reminds motorists to reduce their speed in construction zones and drive safely.
