NEGUAC (GNB) – A $690,000 highway upgrade will soon begin on Route 455 in the Village of Neguac under the Municipal Designated Highway Program.

Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Roger Melanson today announced new storm sewer pipes will be installed and paving will be done on a 2.1 kilometre stretch of the highway also known as the Fairisle Road.

“The province is proud to be investing in this important municipal project as part of our Strategic Infrastructure Initiative,” Melanson said. “This investment reflects our government’s commitment to boost the economy in the short-term through job creation and in the long-term through the reconstruction and renewal of our infrastructure. The municipality and the province are working in partnership to support the sustainability of this community and its jobs.”

Improvements to Route 455 were listed as a priority in the village’s five-year plan for provincial funding. The work will include paving and widening the highway while the new storm drains will assist with flood prevention.

“The Village of Neguac is pleased the provincial government understands that by building stronger communities and modernizing and developing municipal infrastructure, they are creating jobs and opportunities and building better communities for future generations,” said Mayor Georges R. Savoie. “This investment will support economic growth in Neguac and ensure our community remains among the best in the province.”

The upgrade is being fully funded by the province and is being carried out in addition to other infrastructure work already underway in the village. Work on Route 455 is expected to be completed in late November.

Under the Municipal Designated Highway Program municipalities apply to the provincial government for funding assistance for capital upgrades. The province provides funding each year for priority projects.

The provincial government has increased funding for provincially-designated highways in municipalities by $16.2 million for a total of $25 million in 2015-16.

In July, a $6 million wastewater collection system extension was announced for Neguac by the three levels of government under the Small Communities Fund.
